This problem motivated the Bengkulu University Research and Community Service through the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Community Service Team to conduct community service activities such as education and actual physical examinations of the Bengkulu Lembak Tribe community as a contribution and an active role in realizing improvement—public health, particularly in Semarang District.

Community service activities in the form of education on eating habits and patterns and physical examinations for all people in the Semarang Village will take place offline on June 1, 2023, from 08.00 to 16.00. The activity began with a physical examination and continued with education in the Semarang Village Hall, Bengkulu City. Physical examination includes checking blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and blood type. The community was given a healthy snack at the end of the activity.

This community service activity collaborated with the Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) Bengkulu University, and the Semarang District. According to dr. Hesty Raudha Ashan, Sp.PK from the Department of Clinical Pathology, FKIK-UNIB, and DM complications might cause organ damage.

“Because the condition of diabetes is rarely fully recognized by the general public, it is critical to prevent the development of diabetes disease through healthy eating habits and patterns. It’s also important to check their physical condition regularly, especially for people who are already at risk for diabetes,” Dr. Hesty said.

According to the Head of the FKIK UNIB Community Service Team, Mrs. Diah Ayu Aguspa Dita, S.Kep., Ns., M.Biomed, who is also lecturer at the Department of Medical Physiology, FKIK UNIB, a particular program is needed, especially related to patterns of habits and sports or special activities to prevent the prevalence of DM conditions in vulnerable groups such as the Lembak Tribe Bengkulu.

“We hope that by conducting this activity, we will reduce the number of DM incidents in Bengkulu City, particularly in the Lembak Tribe community in Semarang District, Bengkulu. Similar activities will be continued by strengthening coordination with other associated parties such as the Bengkulu Health Office and several Community Health Centers.” Mrs. Diah’s explained.

The community service activities are expected to promote knowledge and awareness within the Lembak Tribe community about the importance of good eating habits and patterns in lowering the incidence of diabetes.
